The spiny lobster sport season will fall on July 30th (Wednesday) and 31th (Thursday) for 2008. The bag limits are 6 per person per day for Monroe County and Biscayne National Park, and 12 per person per day for the rest of Florida. The possession limit on the water is equal to the daily bag limit, and off the water is equal to the daily bag limit on the first day, and double the daily bag limit on the second day. Possession limits are enforced on and off the water.

Trip to Key Largo is on August 17th in the morning. We will be diving the wrecks of the Spiegel and Duane. These are very good Dives, but all divers MUST BE ADVANCED AND NITROX CERTIFIED. This video was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the divers that were there. During an open water class with a group of divers were being led by their instructor and divemaster when out of no where a octopus swims into a hole. When they get in for a closer look there is a battle going on!!! One of the divemasters that was with the students had his camera with him and was able to get the whole thing on video! Check it out!!!

We are looking for some volunteers for to be part of our committee to get some new shipwrecks sink in this area. Broward County has finally received the permit to allow more artificial reefs to be sink in this county. Dixie Divers is working with a non-profit organization to get a campaign started to raise the money needed to build more new artificial reefs. We need more option on of wreck diving and relieve the pressure on the few wrecks that we have right now. If you have a great idea for an artificial reef or would like to volunteer to help. S2R was proposed to create a state matching fund for the sinking of Naval Warships. The idea was to create a Naval Heritage trail in Florida that would create tourism, preserve Naval Heritage and remove pressure from natural coral reefs. We have already seen huge economic benefits from the Spiegal Grove and the Oriskany and soon the Vandenburg. There is currently a grassroots effort to secure a ship for Broward. Just recently the aircraft carrier "Kittyhawk" has become available. The economic and environmental benefit to Broward would be enormous. Staff is recommending vetoing because of lack of funding. They don't want to pass legislation without funding. The problem is if they don't at least keep the S2R alive they may never be another ship sunk. This would end any possibility of Broward joiniing in the Naval Heritage Trail. I would ask you contact Governor Christ or staff by phone or e-mail and ask that he not veto SB432 Ships- 2-Reef and allow for the possibility of funding in the future.
